South Pantanal

The Pantanal is the biggest wetland in the world and the best place to observe animals in Brazil. The South Pantanal, which is usually explored in the area around Corumbá and Miranda, provides excellent opportunities for bird watching and spotting wildlife like caimans, giant otters, jaguaras, capybaras, and various other animals. Compared to the North Pantanal, the South Pantanal is a little more touched by humans and a you have a lower chance to spot jaguars. However, the lodges in the South Pantanal offer a wider range of activities from boat safaris to night walks to see snakes and spiders, horseback riding, walking safaris, and fishing piranhas. This makes it a little more family friendly than the North Pantanal. And last but not least, it can easily be combined with the nearby city of Bonito.

Experience the South Pantanal, a haven for wildlife enthusiasts with its diverse activities like boat safaris and bird watching. Discover the best times to visit, how to get there, and where to stay for a memorable adventure in Brazil's natural wonder.

The Pantanal experiences two distinct seasons. The dry season (April to September) is ideal for wildlife viewing and outdoor activities, with more comfortable temperatures and higher chance to see jaguars. The wet season (October to March) transforms the landscape into a vast wetland, offering unique boat experiences and spectacular bird watching opportunities, while also making the scenery more beautiful.

We recommend 3-4 days to fully experience the South Pantanal. This allows time for various activities like wildlife viewing, canoeing, and piranha fishing.

Where to Stay

Most lodges are located between Miranda and Corumbá, particularly along the Miranda River. We suggest booking a tour package or using Google to find lodges along your route. During the dry season, staying at a lodge by the river is ideal, as it's the best spot for jaguar sightings. We've personally stayed at the Pantanal Jungle Lodge, the Lontra Pantanal Hotel, and Fazenda San Francisco. The first two are riverside, while the latter offers a unique experience when the Pantanal is flooded. We've had positive experiences at all three.

Getting Around

The transportation for activities is usually included in lodges packages. If you're driving, be prepared for some unpaved roads, especially during the wet season.
