North Pantanal

The North Pantanal is renowned for its exceptional jaguar sightings, particularly during boat tours in Porto Jofre. This region boasts the highest concentration of jaguars worldwide. During our stay, our accommodation was situated just a few hundred meters from the main lodge, and we were advised against walking at night due to the high density of jaguars in the area. Indeed, we spotted some of them near our lodging. Compared to the South Pantanal, this northern region is more preserved and offers a higher probability of jaguar encounters, especially in the Porto Jofre area. It is usually a little more expensive than the South Pantanal and the activities more focused on boat safaris and thus less diverse. But you can also combine it with some Lodge along the Transpantaneira and combine with other tours they offer, like night & day walks, fishing, birdwatching, etc. to have a little more variety.

Visit North Pantanal, a wildlife haven in Brazil, renowned for jaguar sightings, boat safaris, and diverse ecosystems. Perfect for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.

The Pantanal experiences significant changes throughout the year due to its distinct dry and wet seasons. The dry season, from May to October, is the optimal time to visit for mammal viewing, including jaguars. During this period, lower water levels make wildlife easier to spot, and the region is more accessible with better road and trail conditions. The wet season, particularly from January to April, offers a different but equally captivating experience. The flooded landscape creates stunning visuals and provides excellent opportunities for birdwatching. In summary: If you care a lot to see jaguars: Visit during the dry season (May to October) which increases your chances to see them. But any time of the year you can find them and it will be an amazing experience no matter when you go.

How to Get There

The starting point for the Northern Pantanal is Cuiabá, which has it's own airport. From there you can either rent a car to drive the Transpantaneira or some lodges include transfer. We recommend renting a car and driving the Transpantaneira, which is an experience on it's own.

We recommend 2 to 4 FULL days to explore the Northern Pantanal. The boat safaris starting from Porto Jofre are the highlight of the Pantanal to see the Jaguar and they start very early in the morning. One day can be enough, but to have more chance to see animals we recommend two days of boat safari. If you want to spend more time we recommend to combine with some Lodge along the Transpantaneira and combine with other tours they offer, like night & day walks, fishing, birdwatching, etc. to have a little more variety.

Where to Stay

Porto Jofre is the main place to stay in the North Pantanal. There are several lodges here that offer their own tours. The tours are generally similar across lodges. You typically won't find these lodges on booking.com or other popular booking sites. We recommend looking on Google Maps and contacting them directly via their website or phone number. Booking is usually done through WhatsApp, which may seem unusual to foreign visitors. We stayed at Pousada Berço Pantaneiro and had a great experience. Additionally there are some lodges along the Transpantaneira going to Porto Jofre that also offer other tours.
Depending on your flight time your may need to book a night in Cuiabá as well.

Once you arrive at your Lodge all transportation is included.
